A bid to build nearly 200 new homes in the heart of a Norfolk town has been given the final green light. 

Hopkin Homes has been granted final permission by South Norfolk Council to build 180 properties in Loddon in a new development called Loddon Rise off Beccles Road. 

A spokesman from Hopkins Homes said: "This process began with a resolution from the Development Management Committee in August 2023, which was pending the signing of a Section 106 Legal Agreement.

"That agreement has now been finalised and signed, allowing for the formal issuance of the planning permission."

The homes will vary between one to four-bedrooms, and will vary in style including bungalows, apartments, and houses.

Of the 171 properties, 59 affordable homes will also be provided, comprising a mixture of shared ownership and affordable rent.

A further nine plots will be available for self-build.  

The plans also include a children's play area, a "woodland" walkway, cycle parking and new tree planting.

Hopkins Homes is part of the untypical group.

Duncan Jackson, regional managing director of untypical’s East Anglia region, said: “We are delighted that South Norfolk Council has granted approval for our plans at Loddon. 

"This scheme offers a well-designed and attractive environment with pedestrian-friendly spaces, and green areas, promoting accessibility for the local community.”  

He added: “When we create new developments, we think beyond just ‘housebuilding’. 

"We focus on environmental improvements and sustainable building practices to build better for this generation, and the next.”

The site spans approximately 18.8 acres and is adjacent to an existing built-up area.

The application faced numerous objections from neighbours and Loddon Parish Council throughout the process, with concerns including potential flooding, the impact on the wildlife, and the extra traffic. 

One resident said: “The dentist, doctors surgery, schools and nursery do not have capacity to facilitate another large influx of residents.”

However, one member of the public supported the application and said: "It is in a great location and close to all transport links”.
