A new food vendor could soon be opening at the city's railway station after being empty for years.

Norwich Railway Station, near Riverside, announced a new tenant will be taking over a retail unit which has been vacant since the pandemic.

M&S Food Store, the former occupier of the unit, originally opened in early December 2018, but chose to close following the Covid-19 pandemic a few years later and giving up the lease.

Since then Greater Anglia says it has been "working hard" to secure a new tenant for the space.

Now an unknown "established" shop is on its way to take over the space which is already home to a number of shops such as WHSmith, Co-Op and Starbucks.

A Greater Anglia spokeswoman said: "We've recently agreed terms with an established food operator, to open a new store, which will add to our existing retail offer at Norwich station.

"We are working to complete the new letting process and have the unit open and trading again as soon as possible."

The station added it was not in a position to confirm the new tenant until the letting process is fully completed.

In October 2018 the city council gave the go ahead for M&S to inherit the retail unit replacing the Pumpkin Cafe on the concourse of the station.

Norwich railway station, formerly known as Thorpe Station, dates back to 1886 and has a listed Grade II status.

It is the northern terminus of the 114-mile Great Eastern Main Line in the East of England and connects to Liverpool Street station in London as well as Shenfield, Chelmsford and Colchester.
