A new £1m boardwalk has opened on the Norfolk coast which is designed to last for the rest of the century.

Norfolk County Council was given the go-ahead to replace the wooden structure at Brancaster, which was rotting away last year.

It replaced it with a 2km reinforced plastic route between Harbour Way and Butcher's Drove, which is expected to endure into the 22nd century.

At the official opening Andrew Jamieson, the council's deputy leader and chair of Norfolk’s National Trails Partnership, said: “This is a really special location that many more people can now enjoy.

"We looked carefully at the design to make sure it’s sympathetic to the surrounding environment. It was equally important to make it accessible to the widest range of people.

“The path runs through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country and it is something that everyone should feel welcome and able to enjoy.”

The route is now wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users and pushchairs and has frequent passing places, along with viewing points and rest spots.
