A town's firework display has been cancelled for the second year running because of the weather.

Downham Market Round Table has called off the event, which was due to be held at Stradsett Hall on November 2, because of the gloomy outlook.

It posted on Facebook: "We have tried everything in our power to continue this event, and to put on a great show for all of our attendees and the general public, however with the long-range weather turning wet and windy for the foreseeable future, we are well aware of what the complications will be nearer the time.

"We lost in excess of £10,000 last year due to us cancelling so late, and we cannot afford to have that happen again this year, so we have decided to make the decision earlier to avoid any payment penalties, fees, and anything else associated with the event."

Last year's show was cancelled days before it was due to go ahead, after heavy rain made the car park unsafe.

The group adds it has also struggled to find sponsors for this year's event, which costs £23,000 to put on.

In 2022, it was reckoned to be the region's biggest with thousands attending the display which raised £20,000 for charity.

People who have purchased tickets for this year will be refunded, along with vendors and sponsors.

"We are going to sit back, regroup, and decide on a way forward as Downham Market Round Table," the group added.

"We may start a new event, we may continue fireworks in the future, who knows?"

It said displays would still be taking place at nearby Denver, on October 26, and Hunstanton, on November 2.
