Nearly 300 new homes will be built in a village outside the city - and more than half of them will be affordable. 

Work is set to begin next summer on Victoria Gardens, a 272-home development off Smee Lane in Great Plumstead. 

It will feature a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses which will be divided into two categories - 138 for social and 134 for the general market.

Orbit Homes says once complete the development will "enjoy large areas of public space, including an orchard, play area and connecting footpaths to local walkways".

Smee Lane has been earmarked for around 800 new homes which are being built in part by Larkfleet Homes, a separate developer.

Phases three and four of the scheme will see 235 homes built from the Poppy Way roundabout to the Smee Lane T-junction.

Land is also being set aside for a new primary school, care home and other community facilities such as sports pitches, as well as allotments and parks, which comes as part and parcel of the community infrastructure levy.
