A farm on the outskirts of the city has been forced to submit a new application for its site after claiming delays for the previous plans have had "a serious impact" on the business.

Heath Farm House, on the outskirts of the city along Norwich Road, submitted new plans to change the use of its building from agricultural to mixed commercial use.

In August last year David Murrell, of D & C Murrell, submitted applications for two pig rearing buildings and farm machinery north of Norwich Road and another for the erection of a stockman's house.

However there have been delays in getting the plans approved, between the farm and Broadland Council, with a recent report raising ongoing concerns around nutrient neutrality, the lease on the land and car parking.

After the farm's partners made "other plans" there is now a concern the building could be derelict for a decade if the new plans aren't approved.

A statement by Mr Murrell said: "The 14-month delay on adjoining land to the north, for a pig farm and stockman's house, has had a serious impact on our business.

"The building at Heath Farm was to support a farm machinery business.

"However the intended stockman and owner of the machinery business has now had to make other plans.

"Therefore we no longer have an agricultural use for the building at the farm.

"If the application is refused the building will stand empty for 10 years - when it becomes eligible for change of use again.

"But if it's approved it can provide local employment."

Should plans be approved the building would be used to store empty bottles and containers.

Those wishing to comment on the new application have until October 25, with an internal recommendation date by the case officer of November 29.
