Dozens of villagers have objected to a new housing development after being forced from their homes due to flooding.

Locals in Spooner Row, near Wymondham, say proposals for 45 homes off Bunwell Road have not taken into account the "devastating" floods in the area.

Several properties bore the impact of heavy rain last autumn with some homeowners displaced for "weeks at a time" due to damage.

The village's water drainage systems are said to be insufficient and new homes could be affected by the existing problem - or even make it worse.

The application has been lodged with South Norfolk Council by KCS development and would significantly increase the population of the village, currently home to around 800 people.

If each home had just two new occupants, this would result in an uplift of more than 10pc.

They said: "We are deeply concerned about the environmental impact of the proposed development. The farmer's field earmarked for construction experienced flooding last year, displacing families from their homes.

"We respectfully request that you take into account the voices of residents who will be directly impacted by this development."

Homeowners also raised concerns about the shortage of amenities in Spooner Row and increased traffic in Bunwell Road, dubbed "Bunwell racetrack" by one local.

Norfolk County Council has objected to the scheme due to insufficient flood risk assessments and a clear drainage strategy, noting the "sensitivity" of the area to flooding.

The development has been proposed for nine acres of agricultural land located close to the centre of the village, which is home to a primary school, train station and pub.

The proposals will be considered by South Norfolk Council in due course.
