Police are searching for the owner of a dog after a sheep was ravaged in an attack at a popular walking spot.

The incident happened on the meadow at Caistor Roman Town, three miles south of Norwich when a flock of around 300 sheep were grazing in the field.

The dog, who wasn't on a lead, attacked one of the animals who could not get away in time.

Two members of the public saw the attack at around 6am on September 18 when they rushed to the sheep's aid, finding it severely injured.

The dog ran off and the pair did not see its owner.

Police are now appealing to the public for anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

They are also reminding the public that worrying sheep is an offence under the Dogs and Protection of Wildlife Act 1953 which can lead to fines of up to £1,000. 

A spokesman for Norfolk Police said: "Dog owners are reminded of their responsibility to keep their pets under control around livestock."
