Maisie Cupit of Southery Academy, near Downham Market, won Teacher of the Year, sponsored by Norfolk Teacher Training Centre, at the EDP Norfolk Education Awards 2024

Maisie Cupit is in her second year of teaching. She has transformed learning for her class over the year that she has been at Southery, engaging pupils, parents, staff and the wider community alike with her enthusiasm and joy.   

She wants all children to succeed and ensures her classroom is fully inclusive.  

The judges said: “For an ECT [early career teacher] to have had the impact Maisie has had is impressive and should be recognised.” 

“It would be fantastic to see where Maisie’s teaching journey leads her in future,” they added. 

Maisie said winning the award meant “loads”. 

She paid tribute to her childhood teacher, who was also nominated for the award.

“The irony is that, in this category, Gill Sekatawa was actually my primary school teacher. So it’s one of those TV moments, and obviously the inspiration I’ve had to get where I am – it’s just amazing.  

“I love my job, I love the kids, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else but teach.”

Gill Sekatawa is arts and DT subject lead at Nelson Academy in Downham Market.  

She is devoted to ensuring that not only her students, but the entire school, have the most memorable and positive primary school experience possible.   

Finalist: Jenna Longworth of East Norfolk Sixth Form College  

Jenna Longworth is a faculty leader at East Norfolk Sixth Form College in Gorleston. She is an outstanding teacher of AS and A Level Psychology and gets the very highest results.  

Jenna leads her team with high expectations and supports them to develop their skills.
