A Norfolk airbase which is home to the RAF's stealth fighter force has welcomed its first female commanding officer.

Group Captain Leonie Boyd has taken over the reins at RAF Marham from Gp Capt Fred Wigglesworth.

Accepting the station's symbolic Silver Bull statue from her predecessor, Gp Capt Boyd said: “It is a real honour to take command of RAF Marham today and I am looking forward to meeting everyone on station and our families in the local community who I know support RAF Marham in many ways.

"Gp Capt Wigglesworth has done so much over the last two years to improve the station and make it a great place to live and work for our people and their families.

"There are still challenges ahead but I know that together we can continue to build on everything that has been achieved so far."

Gp Capt Boyd joined the RAF in 2001 as an aerospace engineer and has served at a number of locations across the globe but has never previously served at Marham.

Gp Capt Wigglesworth left the station in an old American jeep escorted by service personnel marching behind.

Speaking beforehand, he said: "We have done a heck of a lot over the last two years, we said goodbye to Her late Majesty the Queen and welcomed His Majesty King Charles as our honorary air commodore.

"We have engaged with our local community with numerous parades, ceremonies, receptions and other events that have upheld the incredible pride that the whole county of Norfolk has in this station."

He added it was with "a heart full of pride" that he handed over to Gp Capt Boyd.
