Tributes have been paid following the death of a well-known community stalwart who died after falling down the stairs at his home.

Christopher Cator, known as Kit, died in hospital last week, having been admitted after suffering a fall down the stairs of his home in Woodbastwick.

An inquest was opened into his death this week, which heard he had fallen at home on September 15 and was admitted to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

He then died as a result of the injuries suffered in the fall on Friday, September 20 - a week before he was due to celebrate his 82nd birthday.

Mr Cator was a well-known member of his local community, particularly in Woodbastwick, where he served as a churchwarden and chairman of the parish council.

He was also involved in several other organisations, including the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Charitable Trust and Vision Norfolk (previously the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind), of which he was chairman.

Following his death, Woodbastwick Parish Council paid tribute to its long-standing member in a statement published on its website.

It reads: "Kit had been a councillor and chairman of Woodbastwick Parish Council for many years, generously serving the parish through his work in local government, through the church as treasurer and churchwarden, and as chairman of the village hall committee.

"He was selfless in his support for the village, from organising and fundraising maintenance and upkeep of the grounds at the hall and church and organising fundraisers and local events.

"He leaves a great legacy for us to build upon and will be sorely missed by all who knew him."

He is survived by his wife Caroline, who he shared a home with in Horning Road.

Assistant coroner Johanna Thompson adjourned his inquest until February 7.
