The Steam Packet in Norwich has been named Restaurant of the Year, sponsored by Benedicts, at the Norfolk magazine Food & Drink Awards 2024.
The Steam Packet is a traditional pub and restaurant serving four rotating cask ales and six keg lines, plus a regularly evolving wine list.
The food offering includes European cuisine with a strong British influence, using food sourced locally from farms and vegetable growers around Norfolk.
The pub also hosts quiz nights and drink and tap takeovers.
The judges loved the atmosphere within The Steam Packet restaurant.
They said it’s a warm and welcoming establishment, with an open kitchen that enables you to see the chefs at work, giving cool London vibes.
They called The Steam Packet “exceptional” – local, seasonal ingredients from the producer to the table, put together in a unique and vibrant way.
“It feels amazing,” said Ellen Grove, owner of The Steam Packet, after the win. “We are very thankful to everyone, to our amazing team who help us massively with the business.
“We’re going to try and keep growing, and have lots of Sunday lunches to come!”
Finalist: L’Hexagone Bistro Français
L’Hexagone Bistro Français serves simple French food in a relaxed setting in Norwich.
The restaurant comprises an open kitchen and eight covers downstairs and an upstairs dining room with a further 18 covers.
It aims to create a warm, friendly atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy great French fare.
The judges said L’Hexagone Bistro Français is dedicated to creating a memorable dining experience with classic French dishes.
Finalist: Mark Poynton at Caistor Hall
Mark Poynton at Caistor Hall was established in 2023 and has already earned a spot in the Michelin guide.
The Georgian country house in Caistor St Edmund provides a stunning backdrop for diners, who can enjoy a three-, six- or eight-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons.
The restaurant impressed the judges with its luxurious settings, attentive service and beautifully presented dishes.
Finalist: The Last
The Last is a newer restaurant that aims to bring another option into the relaxed fine dining market in Norwich.
It has strong ambition in all areas, from food to service.
The Last serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, as well as hosting special events, and has already earned a plethora of five-star reviews.
The judges said The Last features an extravagant menu, which is well-presented and flavourful.
