A small village pub in Wighton, near Wells-next-the-sea, has won Pub/Bar of the Year, sponsored by The Gin Trap Inn, at the Norfolk magazine Food & Drink Awards 2024. 

The Carpenters Arms turns fantastic local produce into delicious dishes that can be enjoyed in the pub’s beautiful beer garden in the summer months, or the cosy interior.

Since being taken over in 2019, the pub has gone from strength to strength and is busy throughout the year.

The judges said the food was innovative, well-presented, of excellent quality and good portion size. They also praised the drinks selection, noting that the cask ales particularly stood out.

Judges also loved the stylish décor and garden, and added that the staff were knowledgeable and able to recommend food and drinks in detail.

Owner Andy Robinson was delighted after winning the award. “We’ve been in the pub for six years now, we’re busy, we’re successful, but it’s so lovely to be recognised by this award,” he said. “Everyone’s put in so much hard work.

“Pubs have had it rough, and staff can be hard to find, but the guys we have make it the place it is. We’re so proud.”

Finalist: The Fox at Lyng

The Fox at Lyng is a charming, family-run pub that believes in the importance of community and the value of local produce.

The Fox’s staff are dedicated to delivering a memorable experience, serving a variety of dishes crafted from local ingredients wherever possible.

The Fox impressed with its bright, welcoming ambiance and lovely garden, the judges said.

Judges also noted the friendly, chatty staff and attentive service, and appreciated the dog-friendly atmosphere and weekly events like live music and street food.

Finalist: The Gamekeeper

The Gamekeeper is a landmark pub in Old Buckenham that embraces the local area and its broad customer base.

It serves a diverse and everchanging range of local ales, interesting wines and British food with a European twist. 

The menu includes the pub’s homegrown herbs and vegetables, and champions heritage cooking techniques.

The judges were impressed by the characterful atmosphere and strong community feel, with events like quiz and pizza nights enhancing its appeal.

Finalist: The Kings Head, Letheringsett

A Georgian inn with four boutique bedrooms, The Kings Head houses a bar, one-rosette restaurant and large suntrap garden that’s serviced by its own garden bar and kitchen.

The pub plays a huge part in the village community and champions the best Norfolk has to offer.

The Kings Head stood out to the judges with its friendly welcome and attentive service.

They also commented that it was “super dog friendly” and offered plenty of community activity.
