A Grade II listed Norwich pub that dates back to 1836 that has recently been taken over has received the Best Newcomer award at the Norfolk magazine Food & Drink Awards 2024.
The Steam Packet on Crown Road was taken over and refurbished by Ellen Grove and Jacob Emerson in 2022. The pub serves local ales, cider, wine and craft beer, while the first-floor restaurant creates the feel of a European bistro with British-inspired, seasonal dishes.
The Steam Packet delivered an outstanding food experience in a comfortable, welcoming setting, said the judges.
They described the food experience as “outstanding” and praised the use of ultra-local, seasonal Norfolk produce and impressive butchery skills.
The judges also commented that The Steam Packet is a favourite among local chefs.
Owner Jacob Emerson said: “It means a huge amount to us, we’ve all put in a lot of work and effort and we’re really excited to have won the award. We were so pleased to have even been nominated in the first place!
“We have a fantastic team behind us and we’ve built a strong supplier network, so thank you to everyone who has supported us.”
Finalist: BUN X
A small, independent business operating out of Micawbers Tavern in Norwich, Bun X is a burger joint with a focus on proper hospitality.
Accessible fun food served in a relaxed atmosphere is the focus, and the menu is created using only the best local producers and suppliers, with a team made up of people who genuinely love their craft.
The judges were impressed with its inspiring story and successful launch, while also noting the staff’s passion and loyalty.
With ambitious plans, the judges felt there was significant potential for ongoing success.
Finalist: Mark Poynton at Caistor Hall
Mark Poynton at Caistor Hall offers diners a choice of a three-, six- or eight-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons.
The Caistor St Edmund restaurant has been open for just over a year and now features in The Michelin Guide.
The dining room is inspired by the hall’s Roman surroundings and the beautiful gardens.
Judges admired Mark’s Michelin star ambition and the restaurant’s consistent high-quality service and food.
They also said that Mark’s food and culinary expertise stood out.
Finalist: The Grain Kitchen
The Grain Kitchen is focused on providing fresh, local and seasonal food in a relaxed environment.
The family-friendly Roudham eatery believes that food should be fun and champions fresh, local and seasonal ingredients.
It also offers spaces for events, and has recently rolled out monthly evening events, including wine tastings and calligraphy workshops.
The Grain Kitchen’s menu of local produce and well-executed dishes impressed the judges.
The team’s previous experience was evident in the restaurant’s efficiency and coherence when serving 700 covers a week.
