Old Hall Farm, a farm shop, butchery, restaurant, deli and dairy in Woodton, near Bungay, has been named winner of the Best Norfolk Producer award, sponsored by Jarrolds, at the Norfolk magazine Food & Drink Awards 2024.
The business aims to provide quality, nutrient-rich produce at sensible prices.
It has already achieved a three-star Great Taste Award for its butter and one-star awards for its yoghurt and ghee. It also produces soya-free pork, eggs and 100pc pasture-fed beef.
The judges said its approach to customer service and fulfilment was impressive, as was the commitment to additive-free food and drink preparation.
What really set Old Hall Farm apart was its refreshing way of educating customers, helping them make sustainable choices without overwhelming them.
“This award is a fantastic boost for us,” said Old Hall Farm owner Rebecca Mayhew. “Really, this award is received on behalf of our brilliant family and our team and customers, without whom we couldn’t really do any of this.”
Co-owner Stuart Mayhew added: “This award is a real validation for just doing the right thing! That’s all we try and do, the right thing, and it’s nice to be recognised for that.”
Finalist: Barsham Brewery
Barsham Brewery has been making award-winning beers on the Norfolk coast since 2012.
Its famous Maris Otter Barley is malted five miles away at Crisp Maltings, and then blended with pure water from the site’s own bore hole and hops from around the world to create a true Norfolk product.
Judges liked the brewery’s innovative thinking towards product development and its careful consideration for the supply chain, showing its commitment to efficiency and sustainability.
Finalist: Chet Valley Vineyard
First planted in 2010, Chet Valley Vineyard now boasts 20 acres of vines and a state-of-the-art winery producing 29,000 bottles of wine each year.
The Bergh Apton vineyard has won multiple awards and utilises sustainable growth methods and grapes are pressed, bottled and labelled on site.
The judges said its impressive commitment to collaborating with local partners and its focus on growth and production practices highlights its dedication to creating a lasting impact on the industry.
Finalist: Mrs Temples Cheese
Producer of Norfolk’s only blue cheese, Binham Blue, Mrs Temples Cheese is an authentic farmhouse producer with a strong reputation.
The Wighton-based business supplies restaurants and retail outlets nationwide, and prides itself on its green strategy and staff and animal wellbeing.
Judges highlighted Mrs Temple’s use of innovative energy solutions, as well as its focus on professional development and engagement of staff that reflects a well-rounded approach to business growth.
