Plans for a major development in Aylsham have been deferred by councillors.

A bid was lodged by Norfolk Homes two years ago to build 252 houses and a 90-unit care home at land at Aylsham Road.

It is still pending a final decision by Broadland District Council.

A planning decision was delayed after a last minute response to the plans was submitted.

The application was presented to a Broadland planning committee on September 11 but was deferred due to the last minute consultation response.

The bid has met opposition with objections being sent in to the council concerning a strain on services.

One neighbour had commented: "Aylsham is absolutely at capacity.

"There are no doctors or dentist appointments available. 

"Our quality of life has already been greatly reduced due to the vast numbers of dwellings erected in recent years.

People have also commented in support the development.

One had commented on the application: "There is undoubtedly a country and county-wide housing shortage. After all, people have to live somewhere.

"Failure to build new homes now will be detrimental to future generations.

"Virtually all towns in Norfolk are planning to build homes to allow local people to afford to live locally.

Another comment had said: "Whilst I am in broad support of the application, I am concerned that Aylsham's current infrastructure will be unable to cope with the additional population of 550 more homes.

"There is insufficient capacity at Aylsham's GP Surgeries. 

The deferral of the planning application comes as concerns have been raised over a separate planning bid for another 242 homes in Aylsham.
