New details revealed for Beccles' first Soapbox Derby

Beccles is preparing to hold the Soapbox Derby at the end of the month when businesses and individuals will battle it out to be town's first winner of the quirky competition.

Beccles Town Council has revealed nearly 30 karts have been entered for the event, with Hadleigh's Screwfix and Get Sassy joining the list. 

All karts that are entered must be solely powered by gravity.

Other teams announced to take part include Beccles Rugby Club, Beccles Town Football Club, Team Waveney Swimming Club, and Clink's Care Farm.

Beccles-based food vendors will be expected at the event including Relish, TATOS, Old School Coffee, and Sweeties. 

The wacky race will take place on September 29 on Station Road, and it will begin at 11.30am.

There can be up to four people in a team, with one driver who must be over the age of 18. 

The event is free to the public and spectators are welcome to stand on either side of the road.

The course will include a ramp and a serpentine curve, and teams will have two chances to get their best time.

No engines, motors or pedals are permitted.

Paul Cunningham, spokesman for Beccles Town Council, said: "We thank East Suffolk Council for the grant that made the event possible and also our generous sponsors for their support, Radical Waste, First Bus, Cripps Properties and Milestone."

Any team members suspected of being under the influence of drugs/alcohol will not be permitted to take part and their team will be thrown out.

The first soapbox derby was held in 1934 and there is even an international organisation that promotes the eccentric races.
