A listed Georgian building near one of a town's main gateways can be turned into flats despite objections.

Conservation groups opposed proposals to convert the property on London Road, near the South Gate in King's Lynn, into four apartments.

The Council for British Archaeology said dividing the property, which dates back to the 1840s, would harm historical features. It also objected to proposals to remove a chimney breast from the kitchen.

And the Georgian Group objected to reopen five recesses which may originally have been windows and sub-divide rooms.

But a planners' report said the plans had been amended to address their concerns, with the chimney breast remaining in situ and just one recess reopened.

It adds: "The applicant has worked with the local planning authority throughout the process to minimise harm to the listed building and amended plans have been submitted which seeks to resolve the concerns of the amenity societies which have been repeated in full in this report."
