Mr Freeman, a former science minister, wrote on X: "Our next Conservative leader needs to be passionate about Conservatism as a force for enterprise, opportunity and responsibility for ALL.

"Who can reach out with an inspiring vision, real conviction and a serious message for people desperate for hope. As Mel Stride does."

Former immigration secretary Robert Jenrick emerged as a frontrunner in the ballot, in which former home secretary Dame Priti Patel was also eliminated.

Mr Jenrick picked up 28 votes, with bookmakers' favourite Kemi Badenoch reaching second place on 22.

Shadow home secretary James Cleverly was one vote behind on 21, shadow security minister Tom Tugendhat on 17 and shadow work and pensions secretary Mr Stride on 16.

Another round of voting will take place next week before the final four take their campaigns to the Tory conference, starting on September 29.

Following that MPs will carry out further rounds of voting to select two final candidates, for the party’s grassroots to choose between, with the result of the members’ ballot announced on November 2.
