More than 2,000 boaters were caught speeding this summer in the Norfolk Broads with the majority caught on just one stretch of river.

Rangers recorded nearly 1,000 people breaking the limit in Wroxham along the Upper Bure, which is home to many boatyards and is one of the most popular spots on the waterways.A Broads ranger patrolling the River Bure at HovetonA Broads ranger patrolling the River Bure at Hoveton (Image: Denise Bradley) READ MORE: Norfolk Broads boaters pay £11,113 after being taken to court

Other areas where a high number of people were caught include 381 at Irstead on the River Ant, 267 on the Upper Thurne near Hickling and Potter Heigham and 233 on the Lower Thurne and Lower Bure.

In total, 3,095 boaters were given warnings by rangers this summer for various reasons, including speeding and controlling a boat without care and caution.

At a recent Broads Authority navigation committee meeting, chief executive John Packman was questioned why Wroxham is such a hotspot for speeders.

"It is very much a reflection of the nature of the area, with several hire boat firms located there and many people starting from Wroxham.

"It is a very busy stretch of river where people need reminding about speeding and wearing a life jacket."
