A convenience store has told been told "urgent improvement" is needed after an inspector found food on sale which was past its use by date.

The West Norfolk council inspector also found food stored on the floor and no hygienic hand-drying facilities when they visited the Costcutter shop on Wisbech Road in King's Lynn.

The premise was given a zero star rating after checks were carried out on July 23.

The inspector's report says three lamb samosas and a chicken tikka sandwich were found on sale with a use by date of the previous day.

An improvement notice issued after the visit says: "It is an offence to sell or expose for sale food with an expired use by date.

"You just ensure that you are carrying out opening and closing checks of your stock and dispose of any out-of-date food."

It adds the incident is a repeat offence, with out-of-date food found at a previous inspection.

The report reveals food was found stored on the floor, adding: "Food must not be placed on the floor in an area where it may become contaminated."

It also notes there were no hand towels at the hand wash basin and no hand sanitiser on the site.

Wall coverings in some areas were found to be in poor condition and difficult to clean.

Fridge and freezer door seals were dirty, while the back yard was littered with rubbish.

The report states the inspector was not able to view any food safety management system in place at the time of visit.

"Staff stated that they were monitoring the temperatures of fridges, however they had no access to any monitoring records," it adds.

"You must be able to show what you do to make sure that food sold at your premises is safe to eat."

A follow-up visit has been arranged to check the necessary improvements have been carried out.
