A pub that grows its own food and was renovated using wood from its own farm has earned a place at the Great British Pub Awards 2024.
The King’s Head in Brooke, near Loddon, has been nominated for the best sustainable pub category alongside five other pubs across the country.
Owners, Karen and Peter Burton, purchased the grade II 18th century building in 2020, and spent three and a half years renovating it before opening their doors to the public last year.

The family embraced the farm-to-fork concept with The King’s Head linked to their nearby farm, Stow Park Farm, which they bought as well.
Mr and Mrs Burton said: “We had never been farmers or publicans before we started.”
The gastropub offers a regularly changing menu which uses seasonal products sourced from their own farm.
“We are sustainable because we grow, we feed, we butcher all of our meat, all of our vegetables – if it is not in season, we try not to use it,” Mr Burton added.

However, it is not only their food which has earned their nomination for the sustainability award.
On the farm, the family harnesses wind power and uses electric vehicles and the pub is also built out of wood from there.
Mr Burton said: “All of the bar is made out of the wood from our farm. We planked it ourselves.”
“All the furniture in the rooms is made of sustainable wood. We haven’t chopped the wood down; it had all naturally fallen when we bought the farm.”
Sustainability has always been important to the family.
Mrs Burton said: “It is important especially for the next generation to think about what is around them and how you use the wind, the sea, water, everything.”
“It’s a way of life,” she added.
The Great British Pub Awards will be held in Manchester this month.
