A town centre snack bar could lose its licence after buying stolen vodka.

Police have asked Fenland council to carry out a review of the licence to sell alcohol at the Delicious Snack Bar in Wisbech.

The council's licensing committee could revoke its licence when it meets next week.

A report to councillors says "an offender" entered the premises on Hill Street on May 10 and offered licensee Constantino Almeida a bottle of vodka for £10.

The report, by licensing officer PC Paul Hawkins, says the vodka, which was worth £22, had been bought with a stolen bank card.

It adds: "Mr Ameida accepted the offender's offer, purchasing the bottle before placing on the back shelf behind the bar."

Mr Ameida admitted buying the vodka when questioned by another officer the following day. The report says this was in breach of his license.

The officer requested CCTV footage of the incident, but Mr Ameida did not know how to operate the cameras.

Police later seized the system and found the hard drive was blank.

The report says this breached a number of licensing conditions.

PC Hawkins issued a notice under the Criminal Justice Act informing Mr Ameida that the premises was to stop selling alcohol.

But police later received information that Mr Almeida was still selling alcohol by decanting it into disposable coffee cups, although this could not be proven.

In a statement, a fellow licensee, whose name has been redacted, says: "My wallet was stolen from the rear of our premises and the debit cards used to purchase alcohol which was then sold at a discount to Delicious Snack Bar.

"Like many market towns, Wisbech is not without its challenges. We desperately need the police and local authorities to come together to drive improvements.

"We as business owners must do our bit too. I feel the licensee has knowingly and consistently undermined any effort to improve the town.

"It seems unlikely to me that this was the first time he had purchased alcohol he knew to be stolen."

Councillors meet to review the license on Wednesday, September 11.
