An inquest has opened into the death of a "kind, loving and funny" teenager who drowned after his kayak capsized in a Norfolk river.

Cory Chilvers was found on July 31, three days after his kayak overturned at Wiggenhall St Germans, near King's Lynn.

The incident sparked widespread searches, resulting in the tragic discovery.

An inquest into his death was opened at Norfolk Coroner's Court on Wednesday, more than a month after his death.

During a short hearing, senior coroner Jacqueline Lake confirmed that the 18-year-old had been born in King's Lynn and lived in Terington St Clement, near the town.

She added that he was employed as a heavy goods vehicle technician and that the medical cause of his death was drowning.

Following his death, members of his family paid a touching tribute to him, describing him as "kind, loving and funny".

They added: "He was a great friend to so many and touched the lives of many more. He will be forever missed by all who knew him."

The inquest was adjourned until January 8 next year.
