An ombudsman investigation has been launched after the death of a prisoner at a Norfolk jail.
Andrew Neal, an inmate of HMP Wayland in Griston, near Watton, died in hospital last month.
An inquest into his death opened on Tuesday and heard he had died of a brain injury, due to suffering a hypoxic cardiac arrest brought on by hanging.
During a short hearing at Norfolk Coroner's Court, area coroner Yvonne Blake confirmed Mr Neal had been born in Dagenham and was residing in the prison at the time of his death.
He died at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Sunday, August 18 aged 53.
Alongside the inquest, his death is also being investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, which launched its own probe following the incident.
The independent organisation investigates all deaths which occur in custody to understand what has occurred and whether any learnings can be taken.
Mrs Blake adjourned the inquest until a preliminary hearing, which will be held at the same court on Friday, January 31.
