It may not be as menacing as a triffid, but this towering sunflower has been called a "beast" by the woman who has nurtured it in her garden.

Miranda Vasey, of Nottingham Way in Great Yarmouth, was gifted the flower by a friend when it was beginning to grow.

Now standing at more than nine and a half feet tall, the plant owner has even had to have her fence reinforced to stop the sunflower from tearing it down.

"I did some sunflowers last year on the balcony and some the year before in the garden but this is by far the biggest I have ever had," Miss Vasey said.

"Some sunflowers are really thin, but this is a beast, not just in height but with how broad and muscley it is.

"The flower on top is just unbelievable, it's enormous."

Miss Vasey has said she will share the seeds from her gigantic sunflower with her neighbours.

"Fingers crossed for next year that my street hopefully will look very pretty as the sunflowers begin to grow."

Miss Vasey still has some way to go to beat the world record for the tallest sunflower.

That title belongs to Hans-Peter Schiffer in Karst, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany. His sunflower reached 30ft 1in and needed special scaffolding around it.

The current record for the tallest sunflower in Britain is held by Richard Hope, of Wigan who set the record in 2012 with a whopping 26-foot tall flower.
