There may be three months until Christmas, but The Grinch has already struck in a North Norfolk town.

Holt's Christmas light switch-on event has been cancelled, much to the disappointment of locals.

Love Holt, the rebranded Holt and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, announced the cancellation on their website by saying: “Please note that the switch-on event is cancelled for 2024 but hopes to return in 2025.”

Love Holt also described the decision as "sad and difficult," and it was made due to a lack of engagement and financial challenges, highlighting the tough circumstances faced by the organisers.

It added: “Although the usual celebratory switch-on event won't take place, residents and visitors can still expect to see Christmas trees and lights around the town, maintaining a touch of festive spirit."

The Christmas light switch was due to be held on Friday, November 15.

It was a free event and a chance for everyone to enjoy the town's festivities.

Luke Scott, of Richard Scott Antiques, was among many voicing their disappointment at the cancellation.

He said: “I feel this is a massive loss to the community.

“As Holt becomes an increasingly wealthy and expensive town, I think we should keep providing for, and engaging with, the less well-off local population.

“I’ve been here for 50 years, and of course this transformation has been good for our business.

“But there is less and less in Holt for people on low incomes.

“I believe it's important that we remember this town belongs to all of us.

"Having chaired the Lights Committee one year I know the work involved and there seem to be the same problems every year."

A spokesperson for Holt Town Council said: “We will be discussing the issue at our next meeting on 9 September.”
