An investigation has begun after a factory fire smothered a town in smoke.

The blaze started shortly after 9am yesterday at a factory containing gas cylinders and chemicals in Maurice Gaymer Road in Attleborough.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service investigated the area as crews stayed at at the site into Saturday afternoon.

Fire engines from Attleborough, Hingham, North Earlham, Carrow, Thetford, Dereham, Sprowston, Wymondham and Hethersett were all sent to the scene before being stood down at 1.13pm.

Speaking to Radio Norfolk a spokesman said they are "looking for CCTV footage from nearby buildings around the site".

Many of those neighbouring homes and businesses were evacuated, with witnesses praising the efficiency of the emergency services, with refuge also being offered in Attleborough Town Hall.

As a result of the smoke pluming across the town Greater Anglia was forced to cancel, delay and change trains passing through the area.
