A supermarket just outside Norwich has been left looking like a ghost town with its aisles bare and shelves empty - but why?

The Budgens store in Poringland is virtually barren, with nearly all of its stock gone.

And notices plastered around the aisles offer discounts of 35pc on pretty much everything.

This is because the shop is being closed next Wednesday ahead of a six-month refit to turn it into a Tesco Express.

Staff at the O'Flynn's chain confirmed the change, saying they were being transferred to other Tescos in the region to be trained up before the January 2025 reopening date.

The Budgens is currently the only supermarket in the village, estimated to have around 8,000 people.

The other nearby convenience stores are One-Stop in Norwich Road and Premier in Shotesham Road, which are both much smaller than the Budgens.

It was opened in the early 2000s to keep up with the village's sudden growth, which has since seen hundreds of homes built in developments to the west of Bungay Road and Norwich Road.
