Controversial plans to turn a bowling alley on the outskirts of the city into a new Lidl have been formally lodged with the council.

Investment firm Honeyview Investments has filed a full planning application to Norwich City Council to demolish the former Namco Funscape building in Bowthorpe to make way for the supermarket.

The German grocery giant expressed interest in the site earlier this year - describing it as having no "viable future" in its current use - but the news was met with criticism from local community leaders such as Costessey councillor Gary Blundell.

He previously said: "I don't understand this.

"This is a popular bowling alley that has embedded itself in the community and we already have other supermarkets in the area."

The Barnard Road building has been used as a bowling alley since it was built and while it remains open, Namco Funscape's lease runs out in 2027.

There are currently four Lidl stores in and around Norwich, including in Aylsham Road, Broadland Gate business park, Sprowston and Taverham.
