A beloved environmental education centre has celebrated its 40th anniversary.

How Hill, near Ludham is known for its thatched house and surrounding woodland and marshland.

It was taken over by the How Hill Trust in 1983 following closure by the county council due to cutbacks.

It has since provided day and residential courses for both children and adults focusing on the local ecology and heritage.

To celebrate the milestone, the charity invited more than 60 guests with past connections to the centre providing them with insight into the centre's upcoming plans.

These guests, who included early trustees and family of the original owners, toured the house, gardens and moored wherry Hathor.

The Hathor is a regular feature at the centre each summer contributing to its heritage education.

How Hill's director, Simon Partridge, said: "The venue now combined school and adult courses, and unlike some other similar centres, had survived the enforced Covid break – using it to future-proof the house by adding en-suites to the bedrooms.

"With these modifications, the centre plans to increase its adult offerings, which include garden tours, choral society stays, and yoga retreats among others."

Chairman Richard Batson emphasised the emotional connection many visitors have with How Hill, stating: “Many adult visitors remember the great time they had at How Hill as schoolchildren and we aim to ensure that continues into the future."

He further acknowledged the financial challenges faced due to rising operational costs and encouraged continued support through ticket sales, donations, and joining their Friends group.

Upcoming adult courses at How Hill include a seven-day sailing experience in late August.
