A delivery driver who believed he had ‘dishonoured’ his mother rode his moped to a Norfolk beauty spot before taking his life.
The body of 29-year-old Santhiago Dias was discovered near Fritton Lake by a couple who had stopped while travelling home from holiday on the evening of April 1.
They had parked there for an impromptu toilet break and came across him while walking along a narrow mud track off the A143 Beccles Road, past the Decoy Tavern.
Initially, they believed his body was a Halloween decoration hanging from a tree but when they saw an abandoned moped, they dialled 999.
Police and paramedics arrived and carried out CPR. Despite extensive efforts, Mr Diaz was pronounced dead at 10.41pm.
An inquest into his death took place at Norfolk Coroner’s Court in Norwich this week.
The coroner, Yvonne Blake, confirmed that Mr Diaz had been born in Brazil but moved to the UK within the last year and lived at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
His cousin, who had last seen him two weeks before he died, said he had “seemed quite happy and normal” although had been through a divorce during the past year.
Following his death, police discovered a letter to his family in which he said he had "dishonoured" his mother, though relatives did not know specifically what this referred to.
A toxicology report revealed he had taken ecstasy – also known as MDMA – and cocaine before his death.
Mrs Blake said: “There are notes that certainly indicate regret for something but does not specifically say that he had an intent to take his life.
“It does say that he fears he has strayed from ‘the path of rightness’.
“He apologizes and asks everyone to look after his mother.
“I can infer from that that Mr Diaz had the intention to take his own life.”
Concluding, she added: “Mr Diaz did take his own life, but it is unknown to what extent prior consumption of MDMA and cocaine had on his state of mind.”
