A Norfolk pub has celebrated a double win at an awards ceremony run by beer lovers.

The Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth has been declared both Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year by Norfolk CAMRA.

The commendations were presented in the pub in Blackfriars Road with representation from both the local and regional divisions of CAMRA in attendance.

It is said receiving this dual recognition has underscored the venue's commitment to providing excellence within the real ale and cider community.

Landlord Pharez Smith said: "We are delighted with this dual award at the county level for Real Ale and Real Cider excellence across Norfolk.

"It comes down to three things: using great ales from fantastic local brewers and having a great selection of ciders showcasing cidermakers both local and from further afield, having welcoming customers who respect each other and also welcome visitors, and the helpful support given by the local CAMRA branch since we purchased the freehold just over four years ago."

Blackfriars Tavern boasts an inviting atmosphere, an onsite microbrewery, and an extensive selection of more than 100 Belgian bottled beers as well as many other specialist drinks.

Serving up to 15 local ales and more than 40 still ciders, it is renowned for its commitment to the community and industry quality.

It is said this dual recognition is seen as a victory over the adversity brought on by the pandemic.

Purchased as a derelict during the first Covid lockdown after being closed for five years, the Tavern is also praised as a beacon of community and resilience.

East Norfolk CAMRA's chairman, Mark Lewis, said: "Blackfriars Tavern was voted as the top pub within our area for the quality of both their real ale and cider, their exceptional service and their welcoming community focus."

Blackfriars now progresses to the regional round for Pub Of The Year.
