Built In 1898, Oakley House in Blyburgate, within the heart of Beccles, is described by selling agent Winkworth as “one of the most prominent houses in the town”, representing “a wonderful example of the Queen Anne revival period in Victorian architecture”.
The property enjoys an array of period features, including an impressive turret to the front, bay windows, original flooring, ornate fireplaces, high ceilings, cornicing and skirting. It also benefits from beautiful gardens of around three quarters of an acre (subject to measured survey).
Oakley House transports you back in time upon entering the large entrance hallway, with its striking period tiled floor and two attractive staircases, which would have served the owner and servant areas of the house respectively.
The main sitting room lies to the rear of the property, exuding “a wonderful sense of occasion” with its French château fireplace with recessed windows on either side and wide bay window providing picturesque views into the garden.
At the front of the house there is a drawing room and a separate family room, both generously sized and with their own period features, including a turret alcove in the latter.
Opposite these is the spacious kitchen/dining room. This classically designed room includes wooden wall and base units, an integrated wine rack and a large range hood above the hob.
The “imaginatively designed” dining area complements the traditional architecture with “rakish” angles and a 20th century conservatory with views into the garden. A cupola lantern skylight above further enhances the space and allows in even more natural light.
Completing the ground floor is a WC, boiler room and store, and there is a cellar below this floor comprising two rooms, one with a subterranean window.
Upstairs, there are four large, double bedrooms accessed off the large first-floor landing. The principal bedroom benefits from an en-suite bathroom and there is an additional bathroom and a separate shower room with adjoining sauna on this floor.
There are a further three attic bedrooms set into the gabled roof on the third floor. Winkworth said that these would make “excellent, characterful rooms for children, or workspaces”. They boast views over Beccles, including its imposing bell tower.
Outside, a driveway to the side of Oakley House offers parking space for several cars alongside an adjacent large garage/workshop, formerly a coach house. The property sits back from the road with a red-brick wall separating it from the pavement.
The house’s generous garden is described as “unexpectedly quiet and peaceful considering how central the house is to the town”. The majority of the grounds are laid to lawn, with a large pond to one side and extensive mature borders filled with a range of shrubs and perennials for year-round interest.
Oakley House is available now with no onward chain. Winkworth also added that the property “offers an exciting potential for sympathetic modernisation with the further benefit of vacant possession assured”.
