Worries about dangerous parking in a Norfolk town has prompted council leaders to bring in new restrictions, with 650 metres of double and single yellow lines.

The lines will be introduced in Downham Market, in the area around the town's railway station.

And the time drivers can leave their cars in the places where on-street parking is allowed in the town will be cut to one hour, with no return within one hour.

Norfolk County Council is taking the action to stop parking near the railway station because vehicles have been blocking visibility at various junctions.

They say that bringing in the restriction will improve safety for pedestrians.

About 600 metres of double yellow lines will be introduced in Station Road, Railway Road and the A1122 Western Bypass.

Part of Fairfield Road will have a 50-metre single yellow line, banning waiting from 8am to 6pm.

And where parking is allowed in Fairfield Road, it would be limited to an hour between 8am and 6pm Mondays to Saturdays.

That will also be the case at parking places in High Street, Bridge Street and London Road.

The decision to bring in the restrictions was made by Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, using delegated powers.

Officers said: "The proposals will enable standardisation of the waiting restrictions throughout Downham Market and implement additional restrictions around the train station area.

"That will improve safety for pedestrians and road users in the vicinity of the train station.

"It will also ensure that free passage is available for highway users who are using Fairfield Road to reach adjacent properties."

Officers said visitors to the care home on Fairfield Road will continue to be able to park next to the property for a one hour period between Monday and Saturday with no restrictions on Sundays.

And they said up to eight parking spaces would continue to be available for people living in Fairfield Road, but stressed "no one has the right to park on the public highway outside their property".
