Family and friends gathered to bid farewell to Norwich City legend Terry Allcock, as the striker known to Canaries fans as The Count was laid to rest.

Mr Allcock - the club's second highest goalscorer - was remembered as a "gentleman" and a "humble man eager to help others" at a requiem mass at St George's Catholic Church in Sprowston.

Mr Allcock's family, including children Mark, Peter, Sharon, Philip and Paul, and sister Sandra, were joined in paying their respects by Norwich City joint majority shareholders Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones.

Former Norwich City player and manager Neil Adams was also among those at the service.

Leeds-born Mr Allcock, who died aged 88 on June 11, was a member of Norwich City's 1959 side which memorably reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

He had an 11-year-playing spell at Carrow Road, scoring 127 goals in 391 games and was inducted into the club's Hall Of Fame.

After his football career, which included a stint as a coach at Carrow Road, he became a partner in the family funeral business, based on City Road in Norwich.

At the requiem mass, Father Walter Chenyika said: "He was as natural at putting people at ease at times of great distress as he was with the ball at his feet.

"He was a gentleman. He remained a humble man, eager to help others."

His wife Barbara died during the Covid pandemic and Father Walter said: "Terry and Barbara were devoted to each other and, while he was so well known, they were always happiest out of the limelight, close to family and friends."

Mr Allcock's son Paul read a eulogy, in which he said his father's footballing career had "gone down in folklore".

He said: "Dad always told us never to put off until tomorrow what you can do today. He and mum lived life to the full."

After the requiem mass, Mr Allcock's coffin was taken for a private family committal, leaving St George's to Bring Me Sunshine by Morecombe and Wise.

A celebration of Mr Allcock's life was then held at the Gunn Club at Carrow Road.

Norwich City Football Club confirmed it will honour Mr Allcock at the first home league game of the new Championship campaign, against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, August 17.
