A hair salon is offering 'non-gender' haircuts as part of a new pricing scheme in which "everything is equal".

The Hair Boutique Holt in Franklyn's Yard has revamped its services after challenging the concept of gendered beauty treatments.

The salon aims to tackle the pricing difference between men's and women's haircuts which have become a trend in the beauty industry.

Kate Crafer has been working in the hair industry for more than 23 years and joined the salon in 2019 before taking over as the owner in 2022.

"Throughout the history of hairdressing haircuts have been cheaper if you’re a man but there's no reason why that needs to be the case,” the 39-year-old said.

"Some men come in with long hair and need a full cut and blow dry, some women just want a short barber haircut."

The new pricing list was introduced earlier this month and the response has been "really positive" with customers saying it "makes complete sense".

“Sex and gender are completely irrelevant, we welcome anyone and someone's identity shouldn't impact the service they receive," Ms Crafter added.

“We can't believe we’re in 2024 and we’re still saying men and women haircuts, it's just unnecessary.

“We're the first salon we know of who is doing it and we’re confident in the fact that it’s the right thing to do.”
