The Royal Norfolk Show's president said the sun-drenched first day of this year's event was the best she had known in almost 70 years.
Lady Dannatt told guests at her evening drinks reception that it had been a "privilege" to welcome visitors and exhibitors to the showground on Wednesday.
She said it had been the best day she could recall since visiting the show as a child.
She also gave her "profoundest thanks" to the stewards and organisers from the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association (RNAA).
The show a attracted a bumper crown in Wednesday's sunshine, and as many as 40,000 more visitors are expected today.
