It is a village favourite, a traditional highlight which brings a hearty end to its summer fete.

But Shotesham might have to do without its tug-of-war contest this year after the rope went missing.

Tom Higgin, one of the fete organisers, said: "We haven't needed it since before the pandemic and now no-one can find it."

The hefty, 60ft rope gets put away at the end of each summer fete along with the village marquees and chairs, tables and other items.

He added: "They get stored away in barns and houses across the village and despite some frantic searching, the rope has not turned up.

"If anyone has a spare one tucked away somewhere, we would love to hear from them.

"But if not, we have plenty of other highlights for visitors."

In the absence of tug-of-war, this summer's gala - to be held on village playing field on Saturday, July 6 - will feature many other summer staples, including a tea tent, a dog show, a classic car line-up and - weather permitting -  a flypast by a village aviator.

This year's event is intended to showcase the village's many clubs, societies and activities, including its art, garden, local history and poetry groups, bell ringing, film night, table tennis and yoga.

In the evening, there will be a disco and bar, with food available from a burger van.
