A party leader has made a splash in the North Sea as he tries to put the fun back into politics - while kicking up a stink about sewage.

Ed Davey believes there is only one party serious about stopping sewage spilling into our seas and rivers - his Liberal Democrats.

He has visited Sheringham in north Norfolk to go for a swim in the North Sea as part of his General Election campaign that has put tackling the sewage crisis in the UK as a key issue in the party's manifesto.

Joined by local swimmers and the North Norfolk parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats, Steffan Aquarone, they braved the chilly waters on Friday afternoon (June 21).

Mr Davey said: "The Conservatives have failed to take action on sewage, including here in North Norfolk.

"If you vote for us we will fight to change the system."

Mr Davey, who used to holiday as a child in Sheringham, wants a new regulator to be created that will be tougher on water companies and has promised to set up a team of "sewage busters".

The north Norfolk coast's waters have been hit with controversy in recent weeks, after the nearby beach of East Runton and West Runton were forced to close following two separate sewage spill incidents.

For the Lib Dems, they believe locals' anger at sewage in our seas could be the key to victory in North Norfolk.

Steffan Aquarone, the party's candidate for North Norfolk, who joined Mr Davey and other local simmers,  said: "Anger at the failure to stop sewage is a big issue here. It is switching voters away from the Tories. They want to see MPs working for the people, not the party."

Mr Davey added: "From the doorstep, we are getting a lot of support Most people just want the Tories out and here in North Norfolk, the Lib Dems are the only option to achieve this."
