How do I get a Norfolk postal vote for the General Election?

Eligible voters have until the deadline of 11.59pm on Tuesday, June 18 to get their application in so they can vote on Thursday, July 4.

Officers at the Norfolk and Suffolk councils with responsibility for overseeing the elections have urged people to make sure they do not lose their right to vote.

People can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, with their name, address and National Insurance number.

People can register if they are aged 18 or over on polling day, and are a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen.

Young people, private renters and those who have recently moved house are less likely to be correctly registered to vote.

Jackie Killeen, director of electoral administration at the Electoral Commission, said: "A general election is an important opportunity for people to express their views, and registering is the first step to the ballot box.

"It's quick and simple to apply, and with only days until the deadline, time is of the essence.

"All voters must be registered before midnight on Tuesday, June 18 to take part, and those that plan to vote at a polling station need to check that they have an accepted form of ID in order to get their ballot paper.

"Complete those two tasks and you’ll be ready to cast your vote."

Voters have a range of options – they can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday, June 19. That can be done at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is a week later, 5pm on Wednesday, June 26, via www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote

For the first time in a general election, those voting at polling stations will need to show photographic ID.

Accepted forms of ID include UK passports, driving licences, blue badges, older person's and disabled person's bus passes.

People who do not have accepted types of ID, can apply for a voter authority certificate at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate or by completing and submitting a paper form to your local council.

The deadline for that is 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.
