The theme of this year’s EDP Business Awards is sustainability, and the Environmental & Sustainability Award gives businesses a chance to really showcase their commitment to reducing their environmental impact.

Roger Smith, director of safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) at Norse, the sponsor of this category, explains more about his role as a judge.

Can you tell us a bit about your business journey?

Since leaving the Army after 22 years service, I have had a diverse career working within in the offshore industry worldwide, from the Russian Arctic to the Congo. In more recent years working within the construction and facilities management sector.

During this time, I have completed several training courses around health, safety and environmental and have achieved Charted membership status with Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Why were you keen to get involved in the Business Awards?

I recognise the hard work and dedication of businesses within the county of Norfolk and the contribution they make. Businesses and business leaders can make an influential change and being part of that is a passion I also share.

Do you have any anecdotes of moments that changed your business strategy?

I can remember well a story my father told when, rather than get the production supervisor to his office, he went down to the shop floor and spoke with him, as dragging him away from what he was doing was not helpful or productive.

At this time, it was seen a quite a step change for a manager to go down to the shop floor and get directly involved.

His view was always that by knowing your staff and engaging with those who do the work you learn much more than being in an office.

What will you be looking for in the winner?

I’ll be looking for a business that understands the importance of and demonstrates the appropriate commitment to addressing the global climate emergency, as well as evidence of how they have innovated to mitigate their direct and indirect impact the business has on the environment as a whole.

What advice would you give to a business that’s considering entering?

Be honest and open, giving a transparent baseline of your business’ sustainability, as it is the only way to address your impact on the environment.

Own what you do and be proud of showcasing how your business is sustainable and the commitment to consider social, environmental and economic factors.
