A thief who repeatedly visited a Norwich department store to steal 14 bottles of spirits has been jailed.

Ty Edwards, 43, carried off alcohol worth hundreds of pounds after visiting the food hall at Jarrolds on three separate occasions on June 6.

He was arrested after security staff recognised the prolific shoplifter from CCTV footage.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told at the time he had already been on police bail for an earlier theft of bottles of wine and chocolate from the nearby Tesco Express shop in London Street on May 28.

Edwards, of no fixed abode, but who gave a contact address in Thorpe St Andrew, pleaded guilty to four counts of shop theft.

Josephine Jones, prosecuting, said on his first visit to Jarrolds he had stolen bottles of gin worth £128 and had returned later to steal more gin worth £58 and rum and amaretto.

The court was told he was alcoholic and street homeless and that his offending was “100 pc fuelled by alcohol”.

Jailing him for 12 weeks, Deputy District Judge Robert Brown said he had a history of failing to abide by court orders.
