Listed for sale with Humberts Norwich, Colney Hall boasts seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and  several reception rooms.

Built between 1767 to 1781 for a wealthy wool merchant and brewer, the property was then remodelled in the 1900s when Hugh Gurney Barclay and his family moved in.

One of the reception rooms in Colney Hall (Image: Humberts) The kitchen (Image: Humberts) Mr Barclay, the vice-chancellor of Barclays Bank and the high sheriff of Norfolk during the 19th century, had two pet lions, Mitzi and Fritzi, who roamed the estate and lived in the caves built for them. 

However, the lions had to be sent to Dublin Zoo after they attacked and killed Mr Barclay’s son Terrence in 1911.

Edith Cavell was also the governess for the Barclay family in 1889 before heading to Brussels to train as a nurse.

A spokesman for Humberts Norwich said: "With views of the Norfolk countryside and the River Yare, The Hall offers an opportunity to remain as a private residence or to develop - extending its original footprint to provide either an office headquarters, residential apartments, a medical centre or further healthcare facilities, subject to planning.

"The former Rose Garden extends to circa 2.7 acres and offers a further site for residential development, a diabetes centre, dementia or specialized care unit, all subject to
obtaining the relevant planning consents."
