The development of more than 100 new homes in a Norfolk town has hit a new snag - despite being a step closer to getting under way. 

Breckland Council has approved proposals for a new housing development in Swaffham, which has been in the pipeline for more than a year. 

The plans will see 150 homes, ranging from one to four bedrooms, built across the 15 acre site off Sporle Road.

However, the project will need to overcome a new hurdle - after Norfolk County Council officials hiked the developer's required contribution to local schools by £1m. 

Breckland Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the development, led by Crocus Homes, at a meeting on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Crocus Homes said that the company was still "in discussions" with County Hall regarding its education contribution - hiked from around £200,000 to £1.2m. 

"I am committed to bringing forward this development at the earliest available opportunity," he added.

Breckland Council officers defended the increased fee and said that increased strain on schools had required county councillors to "recalculate" the contribution. 

The plans include 60 affordable homes and investment in outdoor recreation facilities across Swaffham.
