A young man who died after his car crashed into a tree in north Norfolk has been named as Kalan Barratt.

An inquest into the 21-year-old's death has been opened by Norfolk’s senior coroner Jacqueline Lake.

The crash happened at 8.42pm on May 26 on the B1150 North Walsham Road in Westwick when a blue Ford Fiesta Zetec collided with a tree near the School Road junction.

The road was closed while emergency services, including fire and ambulance crews, attended the scene.

Mr Barratt, an apprentice electrician, was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the passengers suffered serious injuries and two other passengers were treated for minor injuries.

The road reopened just before 2.50am.

At a brief hearing at Norfolk Coroner’s Court, the medical cause of death was given as “multiple injuries due to a road traffic collision”.

Based at County Hall in Norwich, the court also heard that Mr Barratt had been born in Norwich on April 29, 2003, and lived at Christophers Close in Northrepps, near Cromer.

A full inquest to determine the official cause of death will take place on November 15.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant dashcam footage.

Anyone with any information is asked to get in touch with Norfolk Constabulary, quoting reference: NC-26052024-379.

Pay your tributes after death of Kalan BarrattWords can't fully express the profound shock and sadness at hearing the news of Kalan's death. My thoughts have been and will continue to be, focussed on his family and friends as they come to terms with his dreadful accident. Kalan was a wonderful young man and his loss will be felt far and wide in the local community. I never saw him without a big smile and he will be missed so much by so many people. He was an absolute credit to his parents and I can't imagine the depth of their pain to not be able to see their lovely boy again. May they find strength in each other, their son, daughter, and wider family. XXX

Pay your tributes after death of Kalan BarrattKalan was the older brother of a boy in my class from primary to highschool. My sister was also in the same year as him. I never knew him closely but I did know he was a kind boy, who was always nice to his younger brother’s friends. There were other guys in his year who could sometimes be a bit intimidating to younger students, but Kalan was always a friendly face. I never heard anyone say a bad word about him. I’m really saddened to hear this has happened to such a kind person and good family. My sincerest condolences to the entire family, this is a horrendous tragedy.

Pay your tributes after death of Kalan BarrattI went to Cromer Academy with Kalan and we were in some classes sat together. I also saw him around cromer when I would visit home over the last few years. He was always so cheerful, polite, and funny! He had the best smile and I know he had a great set of friends who valued and cherished him, as I do also. My heart is broken at this news and his close friends and family have been in my thoughts and prayers. I will remember his kindness, humour and smile, and strive to be like wonderful person that he was. Wishing his family love and support at this difficult time.

Pay your tributes after death of Kalan BarrattOur eldest son Noah remembers Kalan from when he first started at Cromer Academy. Kalan would’ve been in year 11, spotted Noah (who was very tiny) looking a bit bewildered in the dinner queue and squeezed him in front of him. Kalan told him not to worry and stick with him. From the things we’ve read about Kalan since his passing, it would seem he was always like this. Just a kind and gentle lad. Such a tragedy that he is gone. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones.
