A troubled Norwich man died during a tragic fishing trip with his son, an inquest has heard.

Richard Poll, 43, died at Whitlingham Country Park, near Norwich, despite his son's attempts to perform CPR after finding him unresponsive in their tent.

Norfolk Coroner's Court heard Mr Poll and his son had been staying overnight in the beauty spot fishing and had shared drinks together, but in the morning the father could not be roused.

Richard Poll jnr told the court he had called emergency services and attempted to bring his father around using CPR, but he had died at the scene.

He told the court he had also called his older brother to try and help, but paramedics taking over were unable to save him.

In a statement read to the court, Mr Poll jnr said: "We were all distraught when police told us he was gone then we were allowed to go into the tent to say our goodbyes.

"It looked like he had a smile on his face."

The court heard Mr Poll had a long history with drug and alcohol addiction, with his troubles resulting in him also spending spells in prison.

It heard at the time of his death he had no fixed abode and would regularly sleep in tents around the city, rarely leaving the Norwich area.

Mr Poll jnr said the pair had an "on and off" relationship while he was growing up, but that in the years before his death he had made a concerted effort to try and improve this - including helping to cook and clean for his son and ex-partner.

Senior coroner Jacqueline Lake concluded his death, as a result of cardiac arrhythmia linked to the combined effects of methadone, cannabis and alcohol was drug-related.
