A Norfolk teenager has shared her Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) experiences with His Royal Highness at a renowned Buckingham Palace event.

Hannah Furborough, aged 19, from Wymondham, was recognised on May 16 for her ongoing commitment and determination.

The event, one of four hosted by The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, celebrated more than 8,000 young individuals completing their Gold DofE in various UK settings.

Hannah was one of the few young people to speak with the Duke after his speech.

She said: "I’ve done 4,500 hours of volunteering since I left, helping on expeditions."

The Duke responded: "Crikey, that’s impressive. Well done."

After beginning secondary school as a shy pupil, Hannah has flourished.

Not only becoming a young leader at Wymondham High Academy but also assuming a role as a DofE UK Youth Ambassador.

Following the event, Hannah said: “It was such a privilege to meet with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and to share my DofE adventures with him.

"To see so many familiar faces at the event, from the girls I'd been on expeditions and residential with, to the DofE Youth Ambassadors and staff team, it really reinforced what I've said about the Award to everyone - that DofE helped me find a sense of belonging and has made me so happy.”

The CEO of the DofE, Ruth Marvel, said: "These young people have achieved something exceptional, and it is wonderful to see them celebrating together, sharing their experiences and hearing their aspirations for the future."

The DofE charity recently reported annual data revealing 545,910 young people participated in 2023/24 and 330,984 began their Award.

Participants volunteered 4.7 million hours, equal to over £24m in paid working hours.
