A Norfolk church volunteer died after suffering a fall in her Air BnB while on holiday in South Africa, a court has heard.

Elizabeth Carlston, who lived in Briston, was 82-years-old when she tragically fell in the bathroom of her holiday accommodation in March.

An inquest into her death heard that Mrs Carlston, who was born in South Africa, had travelled back to the nation to visit family.

However, she was taken to hospital after slipping on the floor of an AirBnB and taken to Hillcrest Hospital in Pinetown, where her condition deteriorated.

She died on Monday, March 25.

During a short hearing at Norfolk Coroner's Court last month, a statement taken from her son Richard Carlston was read to the court.

In this, he described his mother's devotion to her local church, All Saints in Briston, and how she had served as a trustee for Kelling Hospital, leading a number of fundraising projects.

He said: "She had a very active life at home in England and was very active in her local church community."

Mr Carlston said his mother had suffered two minor falls already during the holiday before her final accident, but that these had not troubled her.

He added that after she was found, it took three hours for her to be taken to hospital, where her condition worsened and she died of her injuries.

Jacqueline Lake, senior coroner for Norfolk, concluded that Mrs Carlston had died an accidental death.

She said: "Mrs Carlston was very active lady and went with family on holiday to South Africa.

"While she was there she fell on the floor of the bathroom of her accommodation.

"Emergency services were called and she was taken to hospital after suffering serious head injuries.

"Her condition continued to deteriorate and she died on March 25."
