Often overlooked because of their age, these golden oldies can still make wonderful companions.
Here are seven dogs aged eight years and older looking for new homes across Norfolk.
1. Mischa
Where: Dogs Trust Snetterton
At the grand age of 14, husky-cross Mischa is looking for a calm home where she can enjoy her retirement.
She is a friendly dog who enjoys snuggling up with her favourite people.
Due to her age, she has arthritis so only needs a gentle stroll and a garden to potter around in and has to take regular pain relief.
Mishca can live with older children, and could potentially live with a cat too, but would ideally like to be the only dog in the house.
2. Sirius
Where: Safe Rescue For Dogs
Sirius is a happy, medium-sized crossbreed who started life in Romania.
Believed to be around 10 years old, staff describe him as a "chatty" dog who communicates with staff in a "comical and cute" way.
He walks well on a lead and enjoys going for walks.
Ideally, he would be the only pet in the home and will need a family without children.
3. Joey
Where: West Norfolk RSPCA
Tiny 12-year-old Yorkie Joey is still active and described as "happy" and "friendly".
His favourite activities include going shopping, going for walks and pottering around the garden.
He will need someone to be with him all day and would be a great companion or family dog.
There is a possibility of him living with other cats and dogs and he can live with respectful children aged eight plus.
4. Sausage
Where: Dogs Trust Snetterton
Nine-year-old Sausage is described as "sweet-natured" and a "special boy" who is much loved by everyone at Snetterton Dogs Trust.
A labrador-spaniel cross, his favourite hobbies include chasing tennis balls, showing off his skills for treats, and snuggling on the sofa.
Sausage is looking for an adult-only home where he is the only pet and won’t be left for long periods.
He needs to be kept on a lead and due to past experiences wears a muzzle.
5. Karina
Where: Safe Rescue For Dogs
Believed to be aged between eight and nine years old, Karina is a medium to large-sized crossbreed from Romania.
Staff describe her as a "beautiful, friendly girl who loves to be around people".
She mixes well with the other dogs in her foster home and could live with other dogs.
Due to many years in a shelter, Karina is learning to walk on a lead but enjoys being out and exploring.
6. Murphy
Where: West Norfolk RSPCA
Murphy is a 10-year-old cocker spaniel who would suit an active, outdoorsy family who can take him on lots of fun walks.
Described as a "friendly, affectionate boy" who loves cuddles, he would need some lead and house training, as well as a secure garden.
Murphy can’t live with cats but can live with older children and other dogs after successful meets.
7. Rona
Where: Safe Rescue For Dogs
Rona is a 10-year-old mioritic shepherd cross.
She was adopted from Safe Rescue For Dogs eight years ago and had been very happy and settled but was returned recently due to her owner becoming ill.
Described as "dedicated" and "loyal", she was great with visiting grandchildren in her previous home.
Rona is well-behaved on walks and good on the lead.
